My first read from this author, and truthfully I didn't quite know what to expect. This is the second book in her Goddesses Rising series, and follows on from Under The Moon. Is it fantasy? Romance? Urban? Well yes, somehow it's all of those and yet more. I don't know how I missed this author, but in some ways it reminds me of the Weather Warden series that I stumbled on by chance and then was equally blown away by. I love that these books challenge being pigeon holed and you as a reader just go for a fantastic ride.
In this tale we meet Riley, who is on the run from those who seem to want to profit from her gift. Riley has the ability to make metal bend to her will, and believes an organization that protects those they call goddesses might be able to help her. She's truly not sure whom to trust, and seeks out Sam, who previously worked with the organization, but when they meet all hell breaks loose.
Can Riley really trust Sam, and more to the point, will he want to become involved? He had his heart broken and has been running since, so why would he want to get involved? They find themselves embroiled in much more than either of them anticipated and embark on a journey to shake their very beliefs.
This is a book that pulls you in from the very beginning. It's chock full of twists and turns and the action is non stop. I was truly sucked in from the start. The passion between Sam and Riley smoldered, yet didn't quite deliver for me. Still, I loved that it had such a unique view on humanity and our origins and would most definitely recommend it.
This is a well written book that deserves an audience.
This book starts off with a hook, gives you a good yank, and then reels you in. Exciting from beginning to end, with only a few stumbles a long the way. There was a little repetition in thoughts between characters (who weren't telepathic), which was just a little detail most readers probably wouldn't notice. The story line was different from anything else I had read, and that was a nice change. I do need to say that I have not read the first book, so can't compare the two. Although, from what I gathered in the little reminders sprinkled throughout, I probably wouldn't have liked it much due to the love triangle plot it had woven through it.
Sam was a great character. The quintessential tortured soul whose had his heart ripped out by his supposed best friend (Book 1) and has spent the last three years getting over his heartache and trying to make a different life for himself outside of the "Goddess" world. Thinking he'd finally been successful at both, by running his own bar, and avoiding friends from his Goddess years, in walks Riley (literally). Convinced she's crazy due to a combination of recent events in her life, Riley has nowhere else to turn. Cyber-stalking Sam on Facebook, she finds out about the Society and the Education and Defense school, for whom he used to work. Being male, she figures he's safer than going to the Society itself, because she's been raised to believe the worst of the Goddesses. Thus begins a whirlwind trip crisscrossing the US with Sam and others from the Society, where Riley searches for the truth of her family and learns the value of friends, trust, loyalty, and a little bit of lust along the way. Sam and Riley have great chemistry and both deserve a HEA after all they've been though and this book delivers. I can't wait to continue their story and find out what happens in the ending of this trilogy!

Picking up three years later, Heavy Metal starts with Sam working in a different bar, where Riley walks in, looking quite nervous. Well, she walks out the back exit and is followed by some unknown people, whom she is able to knock out using her metal magic. Of course, Sam comes out to help and starts questioning her. It turns out that Riley knows nothing about her goddess heritage, but is reluctant to go to the Society for help. She tracked him down thanks to his goddess defense videos, but now she'll need his protection as whoever is after her, won't stop until they get her.
I liked Heavy Metal a lot. Even though there's three years between this one and the first book, it is a direct continuation, which I liked. The leech is still on the loose, but there's others working with him. Everyone found it strange that they were after Riley, since she's not a registered goddess, but of course, they have their reasons. The other part of the plot has to do with Quinn trying to return the leeched powers to their rightful hosts. It's taken years of research, but she's figured it out. She just needs help from the son of a goddess, which would be Sam, but he's still harboring some ill feelings toward her and Nick.
The romance in Heavy Metal was better than the one in Under the Moon. Riley and Sam are brought together under stressful circumstances, so adrenaline is high, and their connection is instant. It probably helped that he inherited a bit of moon lust from Quinn, so there's times where he can't keep away from Riley, even though he thinks he should.
In the end, I liked Heavy Metal. It did drag a bit in places, especially when it came to who was behind all of the attacks. There were a lot of little pieces that had to come together, which got a bit jumbled. Then Anson appears, disappears, appears, and disappears again for various reasons. I really liked the epilogue though. I think that was a great addition, since it filled up one of the plot-holes.
I was hooked from chapter 1! Couldn't put it down. Kept thinking "I wish this was a movie!! Great job, Natalie!
Loved it! I can't wait for more. This was my first Goddesses Rising novel and I was sucked in from the first page turn. I look forward to reading more from this author.
