When I finished the book and read the author's notes, I was not at all surprised to find that Dead Space was a large influence on the author. In fact, the book essentially comes off as one giant love note to the Dead Space franchise. Don't get me wrong - this is a good horror read, and it's clear that a lot of polish went into this to speak in the different voices of the crew. Until you reach a certain point in the novel, the wide-open *mystery* of what could possibly be going on is completely engaging and thrilling. And once you do reach that tipping point into horror, you want to see what happens to each of the characters.

I can't fault the author for both lifting and echoing what he did, and he did it with clear reverence to the source material - in fact, my only star-knocking-gripe is that the author's portrayal of women and mental illness is.... a bit on the problematic side. But I want to see more from this guy, and look forward to future output!

The Icarus Void eBook CK Burch Reviews

The premise is good an experimental starship, diving into the sun's corona, and the reaction of a crew under extreme stress. But what makes this book a great read is the way the plot twists around the characters, and what they do. There were a few too many names to keep track of, and a little more hand-wavy science-ing than I prefer in my sci-fi, but the plot pulls you through. It's a wild, unpredictable ride and I promise you, you won't be able to guess what happens next. This is an excellent read, and I recommend it without hesitation.
I made sure to say that this book has a great ending. The reason being is that it does take awhile to get going. There is a lot of character development in the first half of the book before we get to the action of the second half. I think it makes the ending twists really hit home though. Literally the last page left me speechless!

The Icarus is a space ship that literally dives into the Sun for research. On their trip they encounter an alien artifact orbiting the Sun. Ever since they encounter this object strange things happens to the crew and the ship. When the true purpose of the artifact is revealed is when all hell breaks loose. I don't want to give anything away but its safe to say they have more to worry about than just the crew.
The Icarus Void is like a novelization of a set of movies and games in the space horror genre. Mix Aliens, Solaris, Dead Space, and Half-Life together and you get The Icarus Void. The plot involves a spaceship on a research trip to the sun that comes across an alien artifact. They haul it into the ship for further study and all hell breaks lose.

The author excels at building up the tension between characters on the ship. The pressure continually builds as you wait for the next disaster. Also, kudos for a twist at the end that I didn't see coming but actually made sense.

The Icarus Void isn't high brow literature, but it is a fun read for anyone interested in a horror story set in space.
I started reading this Friday and I could not stop. I had other things I was supposed to do this weekend, but I couldn't put this story down, it got stuck in my head and I had to keep reading it to see what would happen next. Yes, there's a lot of swearing in the beginning but then it dies down, as if the author or characters had more to worry about once the plot thickened.

The action is non-stop once things start going south, the characters are believable and sympathetic (I really liked the claustrophobic Captain), and there are enough unexpected plot twists that I couldn't figure out what was going to happen next, let alone how it would end well for anyone on the Icarus. The author did a great job of creating an entire future world, from people to roles to ships and missions, and that level of details makes the story flow right along and be easy to understand and also believable (which is pretty important in Sci-Fi).

Especially at the price, this is an incredible bargain of a book. If you like fast-paced action, sci-fi or not, this is the story for you!
I decided to buy The Icarus Void after finishing (and loving) A Ruthless Echo, C. K. Burch's other novel (which is a COMPLETELY dissimilar book to Icarus but one I HIGHLY recommend). Icarus starts a little slow, which is good because Burch thoroughly introduces the ship and the excellent characters before getting into the white-knuckle action. Once the intensity starts it's a thrill ride to the (surprising) end. At one point I actually surprised my wife by saying "Holy s***" out loud while I was reading. I see a few reviews commenting on the swearing in the book and while there IS a lot of it, it never seemed out of place to me. I can imagine most people in the characters situations would be cursing up a storm. I know I would. Also Yes Monte Canfield you "must have read a different book than most of the others commenting here" because this book is fun, exciting and leaves you wanting more.

I've read two excellently solid entries from C. K. Burch consecutively and I can't wait to see what his next book Equinox brings. Burch has a way with his characters, MAKING you identify with them whether you love or hate them. He's definitely gained a fan in THIS reader.
